With this personal statement, I am applying for a position in the Phd of English Language Teaching programme offered at London University. With my current experience as an EFL teacher in South Korea, I wish to expand my professional knowledge in the field of English language as well as developing my teaching skills. By reading EALS’s course curriculum online, I have found that the subject material covered will best suit my career goals and open up many new opportunities for me. Lastly, the added option to achieve the Celta certificate as part of my course is a fantastic career enhancer and also allows for me to expand my teaching age range expertise. This programme will give me a chance to deepen my knowledge in an inspiring, diverse, and energetic environment that EAL has to offer.
Since graduating from EAL many years ago, I have pursued the path of teaching and travelling. By intensively travelling I continued my interest in cultural interactions and how the universally used language of English is shared as a means of communication and globalisation. I have always loved teaching however it was not until I was an EFL teacher in S.Korea did I become truly fascinated in supporting new English language learners and how political and cultural sensitives encompass the teaching English environment.
Relocating to S.Korea for the last decade has been a formative and enriching experience. While, at times being amid a tumultuous political climate has developed the way I have embraced to teach English as a foreign language.
I believe that education is the key to success for young students. As a teacher, I hope to motivate students in ascertaining their inner strengths and abilities and discovering what truly inspires them. I am able to provide a stimulating learning environment that encourages students to trust their own opinions, while fostering confidence in order for students to realize their full potential.
I have taught, with success, to a wide range of age groups the British National curriculum and American curriculum. I am a fully qualified high school teacher who has had extensive opportunities to teach Grades 1, 2, 4 and 6. My teaching career has largely been geared towards the empowerment of high school students; nevertheless, I have the strong passion to educate young minds and help blossom them into well-rounded, responsible and successful individuals. Throughout the course of my career, I have had wonderful opportunities to teach diverse groups of students, including those with learning challenges, those who performed at year-level, and those who were gifted and exceptional. As a result, I have become proficient at designing creative and enriching lesson plans, which accommodate multiple intelligences, bring a hands-on approach to learning, and keep students interested and focused. I am experienced in developing and presenting comprehensible and stimulating lesson plans that facilitate all learning styles. I research, locate and incorporate a variety of resources to accommodate students via visual, audio, tactile and kinesthetic methods. In addition, I integrate literature, phonics activities, and technology to ensure that each child is able to comprehend and retain the concepts and language.
