What is an assessment?
The Oxford Dictionary describes as assessment as ‘the action of assessing someone or something’. With this mind it may be prudent to look at this in more depth and understand what it means in its basic form.
To assess means ‘to evaluate or estimate the nature, ability or quality of….’
Assessments are carried out with students to ensure that learning has taken place. There is a need to measure the students knowledge and skill in a particular leanring area. Asssessments are a useful tool as they allow the student to ask questions throughout the process and clarify stages of the process that they have not grasped.
The assessments we carry out with Foundation Training allow us to be satisified that the student has understood the learning that has taken place in the classroom and is then able to apply that learning in scenarios, proving that they have the knowledge and understanding of the principle of law and procedures.
Learning and development however are connected. Students require guidance as to what it is they have to learn, whether they are on track and what it is they need to improve on. Assessment is essential for this to happen.
Continuous assessment provides day to day feedback about the leanring and teaching process. It also encourages the understanding of teaching in a formative process that evolves over time with feedback and input from students
There are formal assessments when students are working towards recognised qualifications such as our students officers do within Foundation Training. Throughout their two year probation, they are working towards a Level 3 Diploma in Policing through the City & Guilds.
We also use informal assessments throughout the training course. These can range from work books designed by trainers to test the knowledge of the students after a module has been covered.
