TITLE: IMPORTANCE OF SEX EDUCATION / ONTARIO’S CURRICULUM OF SEX EDUCATION
As a part of subject “Human sexuality “, it is very informative subject in which it has covers many different ideas on providing an opportunity for young people to develop and understand their values, attitudes, and insights about sexuality. Teenagers are immature and innocent, they are curious about trying new things in their adolescences. It is necessary to have correct information about sexuality.Sex education is as much about personal relationships as biological understanding.
To begin with, sex education is the instruction of issues which basically includes emotional relations and responsibilities. The curriculum of Ontario sex education involves different topics grade wise. Its main purpose is to provide living skills, active living, movement competence, healthy living. Basically Ontario’s curriculum of sex education implemented in 2015 with some significant changes that was made in last curriculum. Its main aim is to provide knowledge on things such as living skills, active living, movement competence, and healthy living etc.Living skills teaches understanding, communicating positively with others and learning and solving complex problems. Active living introduce regarding active participation physical participation, physical health and safety. Movement competence involves skills for moving properly and with confidence. Healthy living gives idea about health, making healthy choices, and understanding the connections to everyday life.
As the children get matured they must know the curriculum based on sex education with its objectives including positive and negative impacts on them. Considering the positive impacts sex education in schools can help children to understand the affects of sex in their lives. It also dispels imagination related to sex and broadens their horizon. The studies also answer all the questions that they have regarding their changing body and hormonal surges. Sometimes children are inquisitive regarding the other gender, so it can help them to understand the differences and keep the desire to explore things for themselves in check. This curriculum also plays an important role in curbing the incidence of abuse as through this medium children can be made aware about the difference between good and bad touch. As the internet has a huge store of information that might be misleading, so this type of education can provides awareness on use of these resources such as pornographic material. This education also stops the problems such as teenage pregnancies and transmissions of STDs. It transforms children into responsible adults.
On the other hand, its drawbacks are also there. Sometimes teachers who are given the task of teaching may give incorrect information which is extremely lethal as it can actually leave a wrong impression on the students. Children have an impressionable mind and wrong information provided in an early age can divert them into ignorant adults. If it is not taught properly it can become a matter of ridicule and students may not take it seriously. In most of the schools sex education is treated as an extracurricular course not as a primary one so the students can not get involved in this education in their early age. It may be at odds with the religious ideologies.
As a member of society, sex education in school can help children explore, not only this but also child sexual abuse and teenage pregnancies can be avoided. It is necessary to transform child into responsible adult sex education in schools which inform students about issues related sex and sexual health. A school plays an important role in implementing effective education of sex to growing children. Various studies provide information on sex education in schools protect adolescents experimenting with sex. Curriculum regarding this also encourages the teenagers to use protection while including in any kind of sexual act. According to the WHO sex education should be imparted on the children who are 12 years and above. The recoded data shows that 34% of the HIV infected persons are in the age group of 12 to 19. As a member of society my suggestion is that it can be reflected on me and whole society as the teenagers today turns sexually active, therefore sex education can help them understand the benefit of abstinence in the early years or it can at least teach them how to be responsible sexually active people.
According to me, it is very important to have knowledge of sex for each and every student because it is fact that day to day there are many problems happened which are so complicated to resolve. The only solution is to implement the syllabus with facts and figures in schools so that student can be made aware about this. Ontario curriculum is perfect medium to provide knowledge but according to me the changes that should be made are some public schools do not teach children what to believe, so they can be treated as its not affect your religious by giving them fact that what issues are having bad impacts on society and how its affected positively on society. Ultimately it may create best and healthy society.
