This chapter attempts to draw a clear line to give an overview about Contemporary British literature. In addition, the difference between Englishness and Britishness as well as basic concepts essential for the correct understanding of Britishness. These terms are British identity and British Citizenship. Besides, the idea of Britishness is discussed in great detail and approaches of different scholars and authors are illustrated. Some of these writers are English, some are immigrants living in England and others describe the people from “outside,” i.e. outside the country. The first part of the thesis is also concerned with the life and works of Hanif Kureishi as a contemporary writer residing in England and stresses his works which touch upon the theme of Britishness.
