The Zookeeper’s Wife is an amazingly true story based on two brave Polish zookeepers, Antonina and Jan Zabinski. Their mission is to hide as many Jews as they can in their zoo and basement during the Nazi invasion of Poland in 1939. The majority of their zoo animals were taken away by the German’s chief zoologist Lutz Heck, or killed by bombings. The animals that were left over, were cared for like the guests. The Zabinskis’ worked with the Polish resistance, an underground resistance movement who fought against Nazi Germany. Jan fought with the resistance, was captured by the Germans, and came back home when the war was over.
