The story of the lottery begins in the early summer as school is just about to end for the year, the weather there can be regarded as almost perfect weather, with “clear, sunny, fresh warmth full summer days” (1) where the grass was also “richly green”, representing how healthy and perfect the climate is in their town. Within the story there is also a separate setting for where the more climactic events take place, the lotteries, which to suit all the towns people was held right in the centre of the town. In terms of the date of the story taking place, we know that it is mentioned that the story takes place during the 27th of June which is most commonly associated with being the longest day of summer, I think that using this as the date gives the story more life, as when one hears that somebody has had a “long day” it can represent tiredness, frustration and being restless.
