During the early portion of the renaissance, plague and war diseased the land far too frequently. It wasn’t until 1401, the first few years of the next century, that art influences began to prosper. The first true Renaissance artists emerged when a competition was set out to sculpt a set of bronze doors for the Baptistery of Florence Cathedral. Lorenzo Ghiberti won the competition against Filippo Brunelleschi and Donatello to build the new set of doors for the Baptistery. The bronze doors are now being widely recognized as the most influential masterpiece in history. Ghiberti was the son of a goldsmith and learned under the wings of his father.
