Analysis of a Theoretical Framework for Leadership
Leadership is a position of power, which certain individuals hold, in a group or an organizational setting and have an influence on the rest of the members of the group. This influence is meant to direct and guide the other group members towards the achievement of the set goals and objectives (Northouse, 2013). Different leaders use different leadership styles, which may include democratic leadership, charismatic leadership, and coercive leadership depending on his/her skills and the other members of the organization. All these leadership approaches are meant to increase the confidence and encourage the other members in their performance in achieving the organizational goals (Northouse, 2013). This paper will analyze the book Becoming Steve Jobs: The evolution of a reckless upstart into a visionary leader by Brent Schlender and Rick Tetzeli by examining the framework, the leadership style, and leadership traits presented in the book.
Becoming Steve Jobs: The Evolution of a Reckless Upstart into a Visionary Leader by Brent Schlender and Rick Tetzeli
This book focuses on Steve Jobs who was the founder and the chief executive officer of Apple Inc, which is one of the leading multinational technology companies. Apple Inc focuses on designing and developing electronics and computer software, which include iPhone smartphones as well as the Mac personal computers (Schlender & Tetzeli, 2015). With the stewardship of Steve Jobs, Apple was able to become the world’s largest information technology company as well as the second largest mobile phone manufacturer in the world. Apple has been able to overcome challenges in its management and crossed borders all over the world, which is attributed to good leadership by the former chief executive officer Steve Jobs (Schlender ; Tetzeli, 2015). This has led to more books detailing the leadership approaches implemented by the CEO to help other leaders in being successful in their organizations.
The book outlines the concepts of vocation and leadership traits of Steve Jobs who was a unique leader who established the largest industry in the world. Tenzel who is one of the authors of the book had a chance to interview Steve Jobs where he collected a lot of information about the leader (Schlender ; Tetzeli, 2015). These interviews revealed a lot about Steve Jobs and his leadership approaches which made him successful. Steve Jobs displayed the coercive leadership approach, which is shown when Bill Gates also stated how Steve Jobs was tough on the other members if they were not ready on certain events (Nohria ; Khurana, 2014). Although he had perfection issues, this did not kill the passion that he had on his responsibilities. By him being rough on people, he believed it was the only way to get the members effective in their responsibilities (Schlender ; Tetzeli, 2015).
Steve Jobs believed that some of the amazing things had been achieved through this process. This leadership style inspired a large number of his subordinates and this is seen during his final days where the colleagues were with him and supporting him (Schlender ; Tetzeli, 2015). Being a tough leader does not lead to hatred but if effectively implemented, it can inspire other members just as Steve Jobs did. The members left were better prepared to take the leadership roles, which had been left empty through the death of Steve Jobs (Nohria ; Khurana, 2014). Steve Jobs accomplished so much through this leadership approach, which includes the creation of Apple Company making it the largest information technology across the world (Nohria ; Khurana, 2014).
Discuss How This Particular Individual Has Adopted Leadership as a Vocation
Steve Jobs was creative and innovative with different leadership approaches. Steve Jobs did not conduct research to the customers before launching a product but believed that the customers did not know what they want until the company has shown them (Schlender ; Tetzeli, 2015). This shows his unique way of handling things, which is quite different from other leaders. A successful leader should be creative and not predictable which can be achieved through good relationships with other leaders and seeking guidance from other sources (Northouse, 2013). Steve Jobs was always an open leader who would openly display his opinions as facts. The leader always looked up to his elders at Apple for guidance as well as guidance from other sources outside the company.
This is a good strategy for leaders wanting to improve their leadership skills and think outside the box (Al, 2017). By Steve, seeking guidance outside the company implies that the leader was always looking for more information to help him in making informed decisions (Al, 2017). This led to the inspirational advertisement in 1984, which showed how creative Steve Jobs was which led to Bill Gates acknowledging the advertisement (Schlender ; Tetzeli, 2015). This also shows that a leader should also seek information and advice from other leaders, which will help in improving the leadership skills of the leader as it makes a leader wise (Al, 2017).
As A Leader, Which Qualities Of This Person Would You Seek To Emulate In Order To Inspire Followership?
Steve Jobs always dreamt big and advised most of his close allies to dream big. This led to him achieving great success in his work and leaders should inspire their followers to dream big. If a leader is successful in achieving the set goals, his/her followers will be inspired to follow them (Humphrey, 2013). Steve Jobs had a large number of followers due to the achievement of the goals he had set which would look unrealistic to most of the members. Steve Jobs also challenged other leaders to re-examine their lives and their organizations. Steve Jobs challenged the then president of Pepsi John Sculley, which led to the success of the president (Schlender ; Tetzeli, 2015). This is an indication of a strong and courageous leader who is not afraid of critics (Humphrey, 2013).
Followers are inspired and want to associate with strong leaders. Steve Jobs was a persistent leader and never gave up on his goals, which led him to achieve the set goals (Humphrey, 2013). Followers want a leader who never loses faith. Success is a process, which is faced with many challenges. Steve Jobs always demanded success from other colleagues in the Apple Company, which also encouraged and motivated the individuals to improve their performance, which is important for their career ladder (Humphrey, 2013). No follower wants to follow leaders who do not inspire and challenge him or her as this is important in rising up the career ladder (Humphrey, 2013).
Which Shortcomings of This Leadership Approach Would You Attempt To Overcome
As a leader, Steve Jobs used coercive leadership approach where he required compliance from employees and was rough on those who failed in their responsibilities. Although this leadership approach is good and led to the success of the Apple CEO, it can negatively affect the morale of the employees as fear engulfs them if they underperform in their responsibilities (Nohria ; Khurana, 2014). This can result in increased employee turnover negatively affecting the organization’s production. Leaders should be accommodative to the employees and not undervalue their efforts, as this will negatively affect the working environment (Nohria & Khurana, 2014). For an organization to be successful, teamwork is important which Steve Jobs never recognized. Neglecting the importance of teamwork may lead to underperformance of a company (Nohria & Khurana, 2014).
Steve Jobs could get impatient firing some of his workers due to minor issues, which led to fear among the employees and colleagues in the organization. This led to the company he had created exiling him at some point in time (Schlender & Tetzeli, 2015). Leaders should acknowledge that mistakes happen and should control their temper as it may have negative outcomes in an organization (Humphrey, 2013). Coercive leadership affects the performance of employees as they are compelled to perform certain tasks as a demand, which may affect their overall performance of the tasks (Humphrey, 2013). If followers are encouraged and rewarded for their performance, they can improve their performance and be encouraged to take up more roles, which will have a positive outcome for an organization (Humphrey, 2013).
