. Background of the Study
Cavite National Science High School was known as one of the best schools here in the Philippines. Many students were expected to take the entrance examination of the school. Once those students were enrolled in the school, they were now considered as part of the CavSci family. In their first day of school, most of them were not able to go or to explore the whole school because their knowledge about the school is not yet that much. With the help of this kiosk, they were now able to explore the whole school without getting lost or confused in the directions.
Visitors were always expected in our school too because they also want to know what the Cavite National Science High School really is. With the help of the CavSci Public Interactive Kiosk, it will be easier for them to explore and to know additional information about the school.
The CavSci Public Interactive Kiosk contains information like the location of the buildings, schedules of each section from Grade 7 to Grade 12 and teachers, officers of each club, action plan made by each club, and a short history of the Cavite National Science High School. The kiosk would help in spreading the information about our school instantly. Many individuals would have enough knowledge in the location of the buildings, schedules of each section from Grade 7 to Grade 12 and teachers, officers of each club, action plan made by each club, and a short history of the school.
A kiosk was a small device that could stand-alone and was used for giving information to the people. A kiosk helps attract attention to the booth to get new customers. Some kiosks were frequently located in shopping malls or on busy city streets. In our country, we usually see kiosks in SM or in other department stores and those kiosks give information about their backgrounds. Most kiosks were located in public places, such as stores, airports, malls, and hotel and corporate lobbies. They were also increasingly prevalent in factories and office buildings, where they afford employees access to benefit information and job postings (Benvenuti, S. 2015).
The kiosk would usually consist of a touch-screened monitor and a basic computer programmed to perform specific applications, it was used by a keyboard or, increasingly commonly, a touchscreen. This device could stand alone. Self-service kiosks were used in industries such as retail and hospitality to speed up and improve customer service (Advanced Kiosks, 2016).
The term kiosk was used for a public access touch screen computer that’s normally used standing up. Some applications have been delivered in booths – i.e. a touch screen computer not necessarily in such a robust casting but used while seated. Other applications have simply used desktop computers possibly with a touchscreen, or rollerball, or just a mouse. Other studies have used various types of tablet or laptop (Jones, R., et al, 2009).
An information kiosk was a computer for public access that provides information about a particular subject or topic. The functions of a kiosk were to provide the public with useful information to help them make informed choices to improve their standard of living and to help them easily find or know what they needed to know or find according to (Kiosks4buisness, 2015).
The programming language was important because it defines the relationship in grammar which allows the programmers to effectively communicate with the machines that they program. Most of the kiosk used the English language because English was our International language. It allows new interactive web applications that have access to system resources and provides the same level of control as desktop applications. Today, almost all major learning institutions have some form of online learning implementation, thanks to computer programming (Azirulsyazwan J., et al, 2015).
As a result of experience, attitudes form directly. They may vary due to direct personal experience, or they may result from observation. Social roles and social norms could have a strong influence on attitudes. Social roles relate to how people are expected to behave in a particular role or context (Chaiklin H., et al, 2011).
Computer programming was the craft of writing useful, maintainable, and extensible source code which could be interpreted or compiled by a computing system to perform a meaningful task. Programming a computer could be performed in one of the numerous languages, ranging from a higher-level language to writing directly in low-level machine code (code that most directly controls the specifics of the computer’s hardware) all the way down to writing microcode (which does directly control the electronics in the computer) (Krischik, M., Ferguson, J., Mitchell, B., et al, 2016).
B. Statement of the Problem
The research entitled “CavSci Public Interactive Kiosk” aimed to help teachers, students, and visitors to increase their knowledge about the school.
1. How accurate is “CavSci Interactive Kiosk” in display Information?
2. How accurate is “CavSci Interactive Kiosk” in the touch sensitivity of the monitor?
3. How accurate is “CavSci Interactive Kiosk” in the accessibility of the device?
4. How accurate is “CavSci Interactive Kiosk” in the design of the application?
5. Is there a significant difference between the “CavSci Interactive Kiosk” and the CavSci’s existing websites?
C. Hypotheses
In accordance with our study. The researchers hypothesized that:
1. H0 : The device will have 0% accuracy in the display information.
2. H0 : The device will have 0% accuracy in the touch sensitivity of the monitor.
3. H0 : The device will have 0% accuracy in the accessibility of the kiosk.
4. H0 : The device will have 0% accuracy in the design of the application.
5. H0 : There is no significant difference between the “CavSci Interactive Kiosk” and the CavSci’s existing websites.
D. Significance of the Study
This research entitled “CavSci Public Interactive Kiosk” aimed to help students, teachers and people who may be visiting or inquiring in the Cavite National Science High School through an advanced technology. The information in the kiosk will help the people gather their desired information about the school. We also aimed for the people to be familiar with the school where they would easily see information about the school instantly on the desk or kiosk.
The research focuses on the knowledge of the students and visitors about the school. Some of the students in Cavite National Science High School get lost in the school especially those Grade 7 and new Grade 11 students that are not familiar in our school yet and do not have enough knowledge about the buildings, faculties, and rooms inside the school. The kiosk has schedules of each room and teacher, the map of the school and directions to the place you desire to go, list of school year officers per club and also an action plan made by each clubs. This device was also made to inform the students about the upcoming events planned per club so that they were aware and prepared.
Once a student, visitor, or teacher used the kiosk, it will be easier for them to know their desired answers to their questions. Using the kiosk, the knowledge of the people about the school will increase and that information will be also known by other people. Also through the help of the kiosk, the people will be aware of what’s going on and the activities made by each club.
The kiosk will help in helping spread the information about our school instantly. Many individuals will have extra knowledge about the location of buildings, schedules, and the name of the school personnel through the use of advanced technology.
With the help of this device, CavSci will also be known as one of the advanced schools in terms of technology in our province or even in our country. Having kiosk in the school would be easy for the students, visitors, and teachers to know the information about the school and also to be updated on what is going on.
E. Scope and Limitation
This research study focuses on the knowledge of the people about our school, Cavite National Science High School. The study was conducted on the Cavite National Science High School, however, the body of the kiosk was made in Naic, Cavite while the application was made in Maragondon, Cavite.
The process of inputting the information into a software almost took 3-5 months while the building of the body of the kiosk only took almost 2 weeks. The scope will last until the testing of the device. It can be solved by this study which is a device that shows information about the school but is only limited to the school’s facilities, history, mission, vision and philosophy and information of the teachers and other school staffs.
We considered the information in the kiosk as the independent variable in our study since it was the variable that we manipulated and managed. To see if the information in the device was enough and really could work, we gave the students who already try to use the device a survey form in which we tested if the knowledge of the people about our school really increases.
The device that aimed to create was limited in terms of automation. The scope of our study was to help people be more knowledgeable about the school. The study includes the CavSci interactive map, short background about the history of the school, as well as the time schedule of each teacher and classes, officers per club and the action plan made by each clubs. We repeat the survey after a few weeks to know if the knowledge of the students really increased.
Statistical tool used was the weighted mean that shows the average of the evaluation. The tested variables for this study are the design, functionality, and accuracy for the evaluation which were the sensitivity of the touchscreen monitor, the rate of accuracy of the device in displaying of information and showing what the user wants to see.
F. Definition of Terms
Accuracy was used as one of the variables in the test for the device or software to show how the information implemented to the apparatus was helpful.
Accuracy test was used in this study to test and know how precise the device was.
Adobe Photoshop CS5 was used to make and edit the design of the software.
Assessment survey was used to analyze what information the users want and need to see.
Debugging was used to fix problems in the software or program.
The design was used to know and test the concept of the model of the software and the device itself.
The evaluation was done by randomly chosen Grade 11 students and service drivers to the device and the software in order for its improvement.
Functionality is if the device and software did its purpose properly.
Interpretation is an explanation of the results of the evaluation done.
Kiosk or Public Information Desk is a device in a public area like malls, offices, and schools used for providing information to people. This was the apparatus created to provide a limited information about the school.
Microsoft Access Database 2010 was the database application used to keep all the information about the school and the teachers in the hardware.
Slovin’s formula was the formula used to determine the sample size of the population of the evaluators chosen.
Stratified sampling technique is a probability sampling technique that was used to select the number of samples in the population.
Systems development is the process of defining, designing, testing, and implementing the program of the kiosk.
Touch sensitivity was tested to know how sensitive the touch screen monitor is in detecting the touch of the user’s finger.
Visual Basic 2010 is a programming language used as the main software of the device.
Weighted Mean was used to compute the average of the evaluation in which some of the data are contributing more weights (higher value) than the others.
